Many cancer cases are diagnosed late, resulting in poorer outcomes. Yet, medical experts confirm that a significant number of cancers can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices, and many more can be treated successfully if detected early. This was the core of my message at the University of Abuja Women Association (UAWA) Cancer Awareness Programme on 22nd April 2026, which I was honoured to attend as the Mother of the Day. By bringing awareness, education, and practical action to the university community, the future of our country is empowered with the knowledge to protect themselves and their families. This helps reduce the stigma still surrounding a cancer diagnosis and encourages open conversations about prevention and screening. I commend the University of Abuja Women Association for organising this programme. The discussions and commitments made allow us to harness our collective influence at First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC) to bridge critical gaps in the cancer care continuum. Together, we are translating these ideas into concrete actions that save lives and contribute to a healthier, stronger Nigeria.
